SwissArtGallery · Documented identity
Born in Hamburg-Altenwerder, Johannes Holst painted sailing ships, fishing on the Elbe and regattas. A pupil of the ship painter H. P. Lüdders, he received commissions from shipping companies and sailing clubs. His work is the subject of Walter König’s monograph Johannes Holst: Maler der See, published in 2011 and catalogued by the German National Library.
The Pamir, a signed oil on canvas dated 1943, records his interest in large sailing vessels. In Seestück, presented at Hamburg’s International Maritime Museum, light, wind and waves animate the scene. Precise renderings of rigging and the depiction of marine movement form complementary strands of his painting, bringing the observation of ships into a shared pictorial space with the perception of water.
This profile brings together identity references for Johannes Holst and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
