Albert Louden

Born : 1942

Albert Louden, born in Blackpool and raised in London’s East End, combined employment as a driver with making art. His solo exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery in 1985 marked a stage in his recognition. The Musée de la Création Franche describes a self-taught practice in which pastel and painting encompass landscapes, abstract compositions and figures with distorted proportions.

Bodies interlock or crowd into compressed spaces, while black outlines articulate bright colours. The Petullo collection documents examples of his movement between techniques: Orange Dress, from 2001, is an oil on canvas; Tablet, from 1988, combines pastel and watercolour on paper and was donated to the Milwaukee Art Museum. These different supports extend an exploration in which colour and the transformation of the figure work together.

This profile brings together identity references for Albert Louden and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
