Born in Grande-Rivière-du-Nord, Haiti, Jasmin Joseph (1923–2005) began with terracotta sculpture before turning to painting. His repertoire brings together trees, human figures and animals. In Landscape with Gourds, around 1965–1975, at the McMullen Museum, two women accompany an enormous calabash tree that occupies almost the entire picture.
A narrative dimension also emerges in The Seduction of Education, a 1973 oil painting on masonite held by the Studio Museum in Harlem. Its narrow format, measuring 120.7 by 38.1 centimetres, establishes a vertical encounter with the image. At the Spencer Museum, Dancing Bears in Mardi Gras Celebration (1973) and Newlyweds Under Tree of Life, around 1970, evoke festivity and union. These titles connect animal and human subjects with collective situations within a pictorial world open to storytelling.
This profile brings together identity references for Jasmin Joseph and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
