Frédéric Marius de Buzon

Born : 1879Died : 1958

The French painter Frédéric Marius de Buzon, born in 1879 at La Roque, in the municipality of Bayon-sur-Gironde, and died in Algiers in 1958, trained in Bordeaux and Paris before developing a body of work in which Algerian subjects have a documented place. The titles of his paintings and panels refer in particular to markets and Kabyle scenes, Ghardaïa, Rabat and Touggourt; Le Port de Bordeaux et les relations d’outre-mer is also the title of a panel presented in 1925.

He first studied with Paul Quinsac at the École des beaux-arts de Bordeaux, then joined the École nationale des beaux-arts de Paris, where he worked in the studios of Fernand Cormon and Albert Maignan. The prix Abd-el-Tif, awarded to him in 1913, was followed by several distinctions: a gold medal hors concours at the Salon des artistes français in 1922 for Le Marché kabyle and Le Retour du marché, then, the following year, the prix Rosa Bonheur for his Portrait d’enfant and the grand prix artistique de l’Algérie. In 1922, he also received a vermeil medal from the Société des peintres orientalistes français. He made several replicas of Le Marché kabyle and Le Retour du marché between 1922 and 1926. The Société des artistes algériens et orientalistes awarded him travel grants in 1926, under the auspices of the Compagnie des chemins de fer PLM, and in 1930, under the auspices of the chemins de fer algériens de l’État.

At the Exposition des Arts décoratifs in 1925, he presented Le Port de Bordeaux et les relations d’outre-mer, a panel measuring 8.10 × 3.14 metres commissioned by the French state. In 1930, the Dujardin gallery in Prague exhibited Terrasses à Ghardaia and Fête de l'Aïd Seghir; the following year, Bains maures à Ghardaia was included in the Exposition coloniale. Several works are recorded in public collections: Bucolique kabyle at the Musée des beaux-arts de Bordeaux, Touggourt depuis la terrasse de l'Hôtel Transatlantique, dated 1949, at the Musée de Rodez, as well as Cimetière à Rabat (1919) and Le Départ pour le mariage kabyle (1923) at the Musée des Années 30 in Boulogne-Billancourt. A retrospective was devoted to him at the Galerie Antinéa in Paris in 1983, then presented at the Galerie d’Art Foresto in Geneva in 1984.
