The German landscape painter Josef Rolf Knobloch, also described as a writer, was born in 1891 in Böhmisch Kamnitz, in the Sudetenland, and died in Munich in 1964. Originally from the Sudetenland, he lived in Munich from the age of ten. After initial studies at the Technical University of Munich, he turned to painting; he attended the art school in Liebwerda and pursued most of his training as a self-taught artist.
His work follows an Impressionist approach, to which he remained committed throughout his life. Landscapes of Upper Bavaria, often animated by figures, as well as views of mountains and towns, characterise his work. From 1915, he regularly took part in exhibitions at the Glaspalast. He also served for many years as president of the artists’ association Die Juryfreien.
The recorded titles and dates span several decades of his work: Am Weiher (1920), Mohnblumenstrauß (1922), Voralpenlandschaft (1942) and Riedlandschaft (1961). A work from 1963, Bauern in sommerlicher Landschaft, is described as an oil on fibreboard, approximately 50 × 60 cm, signed and bearing the place indication Munich.
