Erich Correns (1821–1877), born in Cologne and deceased in Munich, turned to art after studying law in Bonn. He attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and worked as a portrait painter and lithographer. His sitters included King Maximilian II of Bavaria and Princess Marie of Prussia.
A lithograph of Johann Petzmayer dated 1849 documents his activity as a printmaker. His repertoire also included subjects such as Fishermen’s House beside a Mountain Lake, dated 1859, and Southern belle, assigned to around 1850. The Portrait of Julius von Rotenhan, an oil on canvas measuring 53 × 43 centimetres catalogued by Genève Enchères, provides another documented example of his portrait practice alongside these royal likenesses and other subjects.
This profile brings together identity references for Erich Correns and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
