Jan Both, a native of Utrecht, helped develop Italianate landscape painting in the Netherlands. His presence in Rome is documented from 1638, and he lived there with his elder brother Andries. After returning to Utrecht, he continued to explore the light of the Roman Campagna, drawing important inspiration from Claude Lorrain. His Italian experience thus continued to inform compositions made north of the Alps.
The Italian Landscape in the Mauritshuis, dated around 1645, places travellers on a narrow path above a valley containing a bridge. Trees close to the viewer and cooler colours in the distance establish the depth of the scene. Both also worked in etching: The Ponte Molle, preserved at the National Gallery of Art, represents another way in which he depicted Italian sites.
This profile brings together identity references for Jan Both and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
