Gerard Hoet trained with his father and with a pupil of Cornelis van Poelenburgh. After a stay in Paris, he settled in Utrecht, where he founded a drawing academy in 1697. His religious, mythological and classical subjects often appear within landscapes. He also supplied drawings for Bibles and published a drawing manual in 1712.
Hunting Nymph in a Grotto, signed and dated 1674 and held by the Centraal Museum, is a miniature painting. Measuring 13.3 by 16.6 centimetres, the wooden panel decorates the art room in Petronella de la Court’s doll’s house and retains its original frame. Moses and the Burning Bush in the Metropolitan Museum exemplifies his biblical draughtsmanship, combining pen, brush tip and ink with grey wash and white heightening.
