Pieter de Neyn

Pieter de Neyn, also known as Pieter de Nijn, Pieter de Neyen or Deneyn, is a painter whose career, as recounted in a biography published by a gallery, brought together craft training, painting and sculpture. According to Houbraken’s account as reported by this source, his father apprenticed him to a mason at a very young age; he wished to pursue further studies in mathematics and architecture, but his parents could not finance his education. He nevertheless acquired sufficient mastery of masonry to teach it in turn. Esaias van de Velde later welcomed him into his studio and taught him painting from 1611 to 1617. The biography presents him as one of the landscape painter’s best pupils, alongside Jan van Goyen.

His preferred subjects are landscapes, seascapes and battle scenes. After training as a painter, he returned to Leiden, where he married, and also attended sculpture classes; the same source counts him among the city’s sculptors in 1632.

Among the works presented under his name, Galerie FC Paris describes a scene of fishermen before a fortified castle, signed “PN” and dated 1637, executed in oil on an oak panel. Lempertz also lists an oil on wood measuring 26 × 41 cm, entitled “Flusslandschaft mit Ruderboot”.

The bibliography cited by Galerie FC Paris includes the volume by Hans-Ulrich Beck, Künstler um Jan van Goyen. Maler und Zeichner (Augsburg, 1991), as well as an article by Ellis Dullaart on a new work added to De Neyn’s oeuvre, published in 2013.

This profile brings together identity references for Pieter de Neyn and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
