Alexander Nasmyth (1758–1840), born and deceased in Edinburgh, was a major figure in Scottish landscape painting. A pupil of Alexander Runciman and subsequently an assistant to Allan Ramsay, he considered drawing fundamental to training the artist's eye and hand. He also practised portraiture: his 1787 likeness of his friend Robert Burns remains one of his best-known works.
His interest in landscape extended beyond the canvas into garden design, including work on the grounds of Inveraray Castle. An accomplished engineer, he also designed bridges. These activities reveal a shared attention to the organisation of forms and space. An influential teacher, Nasmyth passed his knowledge to younger artists and his own children, making a lasting contribution to the development of painting and artistic education in Scotland.
