Francesco Trevisani

Born : 1656Died : 1746

Francesco Trevisani (1656–1746), trained in Venice under Antonio Zanchi, settled in Rome in 1678. Protected by Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni, he entered the circle of the Accademia dell’Arcadia, whose ideals encouraged simple compositions and a delicate palette. Religious commissions were accompanied by portraits, including works for the exiled Jacobite court.

In Christ Before Caiaphas, painted around 1705–1710 in oil on copper and held at Princeton, lighting heightens the confrontation between Jesus and the high priest. A chained monkey echoes Christ’s bound hands. The Portrait of a Nun attributed to Trevisani at Stockholm’s Nationalmuseum, dated around 1695 in its catalogue, instead emphasises the sitter’s frontal presence: her gaze and hands articulate religious gravity and social representation.

This profile brings together identity references for Francesco Trevisani and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
