Born in Nuremberg in 1888 and died in Gerlingen in 1982, Heimo Schöllkopf was a painter and draughtsman in Stuttgart. His career combines artistic training in that city, teaching and a body of work that develops from landscapes and figurative scenes towards explorations that can extend to abstraction. He studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Stuttgart from 1904 to 1907, then at the Stuttgart Academy from 1909 to 1914, where he worked with Poetzelberger, Haug and Landenberger. In his early works, the Kunsthaus Bühler entry identifies features of Swabian Impressionism and notes the importance of Landenberger’s tonal palette. Schöllkopf produced several paintings of Lake Ammersee during summer stays at the painting school in Diessen, directed by the latter.
Until 1919, his subjects also included the circus and itinerant performers, in scenes that, according to the entry, reflect a search for greater intensity of colour. He exhibited from 1913, notably at the Munich Secession, and took part in numerous events until around 1930. From 1923 to 1927, he taught “the means and methods of ornamental design” at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Stuttgart. The Kunsthaus Bühler entry states that he then withdrew almost entirely from the art world in favour of teaching and subsequently gave up exhibiting.
Works of Sylt and Amrum dated 1935 are described as spontaneous, free and colourful. In the following period, Schöllkopf took a particular interest in French models, the Fauves and Matisse. His practice brings together contrasts between areas of flat colour and overlapping outlines of figures or objects. His motifs include the painter and his model, the nude before the mirror, bathers, southern landscapes and architecture. Until the end of his career, he explored different variations of these investigations, extending, according to the entry, to pure abstraction.
Two oil paintings on canvas document the gap between his periods: Badende am Ammersee, dated 1914, measures 52.2 × 39.4 cm, while Vor dem Spiegel, from 1967, measures 80 × 100 cm. Watercolours catalogued under the titles Pompeji I and Tahiti IV are both dated 1973; they are described as executed on laid paper with pencil. The titles and subjects recorded in the painting entries echo this variety: Gesellschaft, oil on board dated 1913, and Odaliske, oil on canvas from 1968.
This profile brings together identity references for Heimo Schöllkopf and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
