André Roz

Born : 1897Died : 1946Documented citizenships : France

André Roz (1887–1946), born in Paris to parents from Franche-Comté, was a painter closely associated with Pontarlier and the Jura. Serving during the First World War, he recorded his experiences at the front in watercolours and sketches. His weakened health led him to leave Paris after the conflict and settle in Pontarlier, where he became actively involved in cultural life.

He was among the artists behind the Salon des Annonciades, launched in 1924 around Robert Fernier, Robert Bouroult and André Charigny. Landscapes of thawing snow in the French and Swiss Jura helped establish his reputation as a painter of mountain life. He also depicted markets, circuses and Italian scenes. Recognised at the Salon des artistes français, he advocated a regionally rooted school of painting in Franche-Comté.

This profile brings together identity references for André Roz and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
