Franciszek Starowieyski (1930–2009), born in Bratkówka, studied painting at the academies in Kraków and Warsaw, graduating in 1955. A painter, draughtsman, poster artist and stage designer, he became an important figure in the Polish school of posters. His designs for theatre and cinema developed a personal language rather than simply illustrating the productions they advertised.
His imagery brings sensual anatomies, skulls, birds and metamorphoses into compositions informed by the Baroque. Precise drawing, calligraphic inscriptions and chiaroscuro support reflections on desire and mortality. From 1980 his Theatre of Drawing transformed the making of large works into a public event, involving models and exchanges with spectators. This practice extended his graphic work into a collective experience while retaining the command of line that characterises his posters.
