Shirley Goldfarb (1925–1980) studied at New York’s Art Students League after a brief involvement with theatre. There she met the draughtsman Gregory Masurovsky, whom she married in 1953; the couple settled in Paris the following year. Paul Facchetti presented her first solo exhibition in 1956 and showed her work again in 1965, with a preface by Michel Butor. Her painting shifted from a strongly gestural approach to a monochrome period between 1966 and 1970. She subsequently developed surfaces composed of small palette-knife touches, repeated in a back-and-forth movement. Yellow Ovale (1966) and Once Upon a Time (1974) mark this development. Her journal offers a further record of her life as an artist; Caroline Loeb adapted it for the stage in 2000.
