A painter, creator of spatial forms and scenographer, Ryszard Winiarski makes chance a principle of visual construction, drawing in particular on probability, game theory and statistical analysis. Born in Lviv in 1936, he dies in Warsaw in 2006. Before entering the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, he completes a degree in mechanical engineering at Warsaw University of Technology, where his thesis focuses on hydraulic and pneumatic relays; during his art studies, he works as technical director at the Stelmos gasket factory.
At the Academy, Mieczysław Porębski’s course on the relationship between art and science plays an important role in the development of his practice. His degree project, completed in 1966 under the title «Zdarzenie – Informacja – Obraz» («Event – Information – Image»), formulates a theory of image programming and presents the cycle «W kierunku wizualnej reprezentacji rozkładów statystycznych». In these works, black squares are arranged on a grid according to data drawn, among other sources, from dice throws, stock prices or transport ticket numbers. Chance is thus associated with an order defined by a set of rules. Shortly after completing his studies, Winiarski presents this programming process at the Symposium of Artists and Scientists in Puławy, in 1966.
Participation can also become part of the work: one of his presentations of programmed images invites the public to take part in the creative process through games devised by the artist. From 1971, he introduces reflective surfaces that return visitors’ own image to them. At the same time, he creates, among other things, sets for the Polish Theatre in Warsaw between 1967 and 1977. From 1976, he develops an activity in the «Game Salons», involving participants selected by lot.
A sales listing records around fifty solo exhibitions and cites, among the group exhibitions, the 1969 São Paulo Biennial and the Nuremberg Constructivist Biennial in 1969 and 1971. «Game (E-13)», dated 1979, also attests to the materiality of his compositions: the catalogue describes it as an acrylic-on-wood work, made up of elements measuring 12 × 12 cm on a support measuring 35 × 35 cm.
This profile brings together identity references for Ryszard Winiarski and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
