Cuban painter René Portocarrero (1912–1985) works notably in cycles, with groups devoted to interiors, feasts, and a contemporary mythology. The landscapes of Havana also form a thread running through his work. He takes courses at the San Alejandro Academy of Plastic Arts and exhibits for the first time in 1934 at the Lyceum of Havana. His activities also include the large-scale mural Historia de las Antillas, created for the Habana Hilton hotel, now Habana Libre.
In 1951, Homenaje a Trinidad earns him the national painting prize; the work, held according to the source at the National Museum of Fine Arts of Cuba, marks the beginning of the series Paisajes de La Habana. In 1962, he inaugurates Color de Cuba, an exhibition devoted to themes of Santería, an Afro-Cuban religion. A gouache entitled Figur auf blauem Grund is described as signed and dated “(19)69”; it measures 31.5 × 27 cm.
