Lorenzo Sabbatini, known as Lorenzino da Bologna, was a sixteenth-century painter who died in Rome in 1577. A pupil of Prospero Fontana, he belonged to the Bolognese Mannerist milieu. His association with Giorgio Vasari brought him to Florence, where he contributed to decorations for the wedding of Francesco de’ Medici and Joanna of Austria. The paintings begun in 1570 for the Saint Michael chapel in Bologna's San Giacomo Maggiore particularly reveal his interest in Parmigianino.
Following Gregory XIII's election in 1572, Sabbatini moved to Rome and worked alongside Vasari in the Vatican's Sala Regia. He also participated in the decoration of the Pauline Chapel and subsequently directed further papal projects. His painting combines elegant figures, decorative composition and references to Michelangelo, adapted to religious commissions and extensive courtly programmes.
