Jo Niemeyer’s practice brings together geometric composition and the study of nature. A German artist born in 1946 in Alf, Rhineland-Palatinate, he explores space, time, distances and proportions through an approach described as scientific. After three years of studying photography and graphic arts, he made his first painting composed of geometric forms in 1966. He then studied industrial design for one year, beginning in 1967, at the Atheneum in Finland. Before devoting himself to painting, he experimented with photography, particularly architectural photography; in 1970, he left his work as a professional photographer to become an independent artist.
His minimalist geometric compositions draw on the «proportio divina». In his early paintings, he used different colours, then gradually favoured red, blue and yellow, combined with black and white. The source links the gradual abandonment of green to the place he gives to nature in his work. This research takes on a landscape dimension with «20 steps around the world», a project conceived in 1989 and inaugurated in 1997 in Ropinsalmi, Finland. The route around the Earth is divided into twenty segments according to a logarithmic progression linked to the golden ratio; twenty hardened-steel elements mark its stages.
In the 1980s, at Matti Kujasalo’s request, Niemeyer taught printing techniques in the Department of Graphic Arts. A selection of exhibitions includes «Experiment konkret 2005» at the Museum für Konkrete Kunst in Ingolstadt, followed in 2008 by «Pure Abstract Art» at the Mondriaanhuis in Amersfoort and «Hommage à Vordemberge-Gildewart» at the Kunsthalle Osnabrück; a presentation was also devoted to him at the Arithmeum in Bonn in 2009. He lives and works between Germany, France and Finland.
