Frans Francken I, also known as Frans Francken the Elder, was a Flemish painter born in 1542 and died in 1616. The father of Frans II, known as the Younger, he is often confused with his son, to whom some works are also attributed.
His work includes large religious paintings, sometimes difficult to distinguish from those by his brothers, as well as rare cabinet paintings. The examples cited include a Jesus Among the Doctors of 1587 in Antwerp Cathedral, and a Carrying of the Cross of 1597, formerly in Dresden. Works from his studio include Ascents to Calvary recorded in Glasgow and Baltimore, as well as Feasts of Belshazzar in Poitiers, Rouen and Besançon.
This profile brings together identity references for Frans Francken I and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
