Gotthardt Kuehl trained at the Dresden Academy and then in Munich under Wilhelm von Diez. He lived in Paris from 1878 to 1889, regularly exhibiting at the Salon. Back in Munich, he helped found the Secession before becoming a professor in Dresden during the 1890s. His interest in Dutch painting accompanied a gradual move towards freer brushwork and painting outdoors.
The Bavarian State Painting Collections hold Sad News, an oil on wood painted around 1891, and Church Interior, depicting an aisle of Lübeck Cathedral, executed on cardboard around 1910–1912. The Albertinum preserves The Garden Room, dated 1895–1900. Sad News was purchased from the artist at the Munich Secession exhibition in 1907, and Church Interior was bought from the art trade in 1914.
This profile brings together identity references for Gotthardt Kuehl and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
