Franz Ludwig Catel (1778–1856), trained in Berlin and Paris, settled in Rome in 1811. Beginning with wood sculpture and graphic art, he gave figures a central role within his Italian landscapes. Gestures and encounters turn the landscape view into a genre scene animated by human activity.
Crown Prince Ludwig in the Spanish Wine Tavern in Rome (1824), an oil painting on canvas in the Neue Pinakothek collection, gathers artists and their patron around a table. The view towards the Tiber and Aventine locates this informal gathering within the city. A different scale appears in Asinello (1830) at the Gallerie d’Italia in Naples: the small donkey is painted in oil on paper mounted on canvas, its 21-by-30-centimetre format concentrating attention on the animal motif.
This profile brings together identity references for Franz Ludwig Catel and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
