German artist Michael Buthe (1944–1994) worked across a variety of forms and media: textile works, drawings, film, paintings, photographs, collages, diaries and assemblage sculptures. From 1964 to 1965, he studied at the Werkkunstschule in Kassel in Adolf Buchleiter’s applied painting and morphology class, then attended Arnold Bode’s courses until 1968.
He settled in Cologne in 1968, a city that remained of great importance to him. In 1971, he made his first trip to Morocco and thereafter travelled between Cologne and Marrakech. In 1976, he received the Villa Romana Prize and spent a year in Florence. On his return to Cologne in 1977, he began writing Die wunderbare Reise des Saladin Ben Ismael; other tales, parables, poems and diaries followed. His career also included teaching: appointed visiting professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy in 1981, he became a professor there in 1983.
His participation in When Attitudes Became Form in 1969 and in documenta 5 in 1972 also mark his exhibition career; at documenta 5, his works were shown in the «Mythologie Individuelle» section. In 1984, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Ghent, predecessor of S.M.A.K., devoted the exhibition Inch Allah to him. Two years later, a work by Buthe was presented in Ghent as part of Chambres d’Amis.
