Helmut Middendorf

Born in 1953 in Dinklage, Germany, Helmut Middendorf took part in the founding of Galerie am Moritzplatz in Berlin-Kreuzberg in 1977. He is associated with the New Fauves (Neue Wilde) movement, alongside Rainer Fetting, Salomé and Elvira Bach, among others. His practice is not limited to painting: it also includes drawing, assemblage, film, photography and performance.
Early in his career, his painted series took musicians and singers, the streets of Berlin at night, and rock or punk concerts as their subjects. In the late 1980s, he made black paintings, which he associated with a reflection on his life and status as an artist and regarded as a new beginning. In a more recent period, his painting combines abstraction and figuration; diluted acrylic allows him to work with transparency. An untitled work from 1987, catalogued as acrylic on paper, measures 98 × 68 cm.
In 1980, a grant from the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst enabled him to travel to New York. According to Savoir.fr, he lives and works in Berlin and Athens. His work was presented in two exhibitions devoted to the New Fauves: « Obsessive Malerei – Ein Rückblick auf die Neuen Wilden », at the Centre for Art and Media Karlsruhe in 2003-2004, followed by « Die Erfindung der Neuen Wilden – Malerei und Subkultur um 1980 », at the Ludwig Forum für Internationale Kunst in Aachen in 2018-2019.
