Paul Flora
Born : 1922Died : 2009
Paul Flora (1922–2009) developed a drawn universe in which humour mingles with strangeness. Born in Glurns in South Tyrol, he grew up in Innsbruck and received lessons from Max von Esterle before studying at the Munich Academy. After the war he worked in Innsbruck as an illustrator, caricaturist and graphic artist. Contributions to the Austrian and German press, including Die Zeit, accompanied his independent artistic production. Venice, winter landscapes, the circus and the café provide settings for his scenes, sometimes inhabited by historical figures such as Napoleon or Wagner. Pen and ink occupy a documented place in his practice. A member of the Vienna Art Club from 1948, he also exhibited at the Vienna Secession in 1956.
