Antonio da Correggio

Born : 1489Died : 1534

Antonio Allegri, known as Correggio, who died in 1534, was a major figure of the Renaissance in Emilia. His work in Parma includes the dome frescoes of San Giovanni Evangelista and the cathedral, where he developed illusionistic painting. More intimate religious works complement this monumental scale, including the Virgin and Child with the Young Saint John the Baptist, around 1515, at the Art Institute of Chicago. Drawing offers another approach to his practice: the same museum holds a Foreshortened Angel and a study of Saint Benedict for the Coronation of the Virgin. These sheets document his attention to poses and figures in connection with painted compositions. His practice thus links small devotional paintings, studies and large decorative schemes.

This profile brings together identity references for Antonio da Correggio and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
