Eglon van der Neer

Eglon van der Neer, son of the landscape painter Aert van der Neer, trained in Amsterdam with his father and Jacob van Loo. His career took him to Brussels and subsequently Düsseldorf, where he served the Elector Palatine. In the Lady Playing a Lute, dated 1675 and held by the Leiden Collection, an elegant musician appears before architecture partly concealed by heavy curtains.

The Reader at the Metropolitan Museum, long attributed to Gerard ter Borch, depicts a woman looking up from her book among writing implements and an extinguished candle. Van der Neer also painted biblical landscapes. In Tobias and the Angel, a small signed panel of 1690 at the Rijksmuseum, the angel points towards a fish beneath the trees; a dog accompanies the young traveller.

This profile brings together identity references for Eglon van der Neer and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
