Jan Luyken

Born : 1649Died : 1712

The Dutch draughtsman and printmaker Jan Luyken brought images and texts together through book illustration. De Krygsman, published in a collection devoted to occupations in 1694, presents two military figures beside a tree, while a battle takes place in the distance. The scene accompanies a moral reflection. In 1704, Joseph Sold by His Brothers illustrated an Amsterdam edition of the works of Flavius Josephus.

A posthumous edition of Beschouwing der wereld appeared in 1725. A study for this book depicts a busy town square, with a man seen from behind extending his arms in the foreground. His drawing Battle of the Gods and Giants opens another narrative field: pen, brown ink and wash place his graphic means at the service of mythology.

This profile brings together identity references for Jan Luyken and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
