Pieter Quast

Died : 1647

Pieter Jansz Quast was an Amsterdam painter and draughtsman who joined the guild in The Hague in 1634 before returning to his native city during the 1640s. His subjects include peasants, soldiers, conversations and scenes connected with comic theatre. His meticulous drawings on vellum also circulated through prints by Salomon Savery.

The Foot Operation, painted around 1634–1640 and held by the Rijksmuseum, shows a surgeon examining an elderly man. An operation to remove the supposed stone of folly, depicted on the left, strengthens the satire. The National Gallery likewise interprets A Man and a Woman in a Stableyard as theatrical: an officer orders a kneeling peasant to adjust his spur. A Standing Man in the same museum, probably painted in 1630–1635, uses a previously painted wooden panel.

This profile brings together identity references for Pieter Quast and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
