Wolfgang Mattheuer (1927–2004), born in Reichenbach in the Vogtland, first trained in lithography before studying in Leipzig from 1946 to 1951. He taught at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst from 1953 to 1974, becoming a professor in 1965. Alongside Bernhard Heisig and Werner Tübke, he was a leading figure of the Leipzig School.
His figurative painting uses landscape, allegory and mythological references to question contemporary society. Figures such as Sisyphus and Cain embody conflicts between individuals, work and power. He also developed a sculptural practice, with The Step of the Century among its major achievements. Participation in documenta 6 in 1977 brought recognition beyond East Germany. Mattheuer left the Socialist Unity Party in 1988 and joined Leipzig’s Monday demonstrations in 1989.
This profile brings together identity references for Wolfgang Mattheuer and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
