Ernst Ferdinand Oehme

Ernst Ferdinand Oehme belongs to Dresden Romanticism, where he presented his Cathedral in Winter at the academy exhibition of 1821. The work demonstrates his affinity with Caspar David Friedrich. The Louvre’s Landscape of the Ore Mountains, painted in 1826, depicts two miners praying before descending into the shaft. The composition was conceived during his Roman stay and subsequently painted in Dresden.

Architecture and observation of nature also occupy his drawings. In A Portal of a Church from the 1820s, at the Metropolitan Museum, watercolour and brown ink are heightened with opaque white. A Study of a Tree in the same museum, drawn from life on 3 October 1832, concentrates the graphite on an oak’s trunk, weathered bark and exposed roots.

This profile brings together identity references for Ernst Ferdinand Oehme and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
