Peter Lanyon’s work combines abstract values with ideas about landscape and the figure. From 1959, he took up gliding; this experience opened up new perspectives on landscape, which he incorporated into his artistic work.
The British artist Lanyon was born in St Ives, Cornwall, in 1918 and died in 1964. He received instruction from Borlase Smart. He served in the Royal Air Force from 1940 to 1945, during the Second World War. After the war, he distanced himself from the St Ives School and became involved with the Crypt Group and the Penwith School of Art. He exhibited at the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles in 1947; his first solo exhibition took place in London in 1950, the year in which he also began teaching. In 1954, he received the British Critics’ Prize.
The Schuler Auktionen catalogue lists Tideway, a work from 1964, as mixed media on paper; it states that it is signed, dated and numbered in pencil, and that its verso bears, among other things, the inscription “Gouache”. A retrospective of his work was held at Tate St Ives in 2010. Tate collection and Arts Council Collection are among the collections cited by DACS as holding works by Lanyon.
This profile brings together identity references for Peter Lanyon and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
