Jan Mytens, also known as Jan Mijtens, was a portrait painter from The Hague, born around 1613–1614 and deceased in 1670. He joined the Guild of Saint Luke in 1639 and became one of the first members of the Confrerie Pictura in 1656. His patrons included urban elites and members of the circle surrounding the House of Orange. He painted individual likenesses as well as family groups.
In the Portrait of the van der Graeff Family, dated 1654 and held in Birmingham, elegant clothing and landscape accompany family symbolism: a deceased child appears in the clouds. The Fondation Custodia’s Portrait of a Young Girl Picking Grapes, around 1638–1640, places a single figure in a wooded setting. Her imaginary blue costume contributes to the pastoral character of the representation.
This profile brings together identity references for Johannes Mytens and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
