A native of Delft, where he died in 1641, Michiel van Mierevelt trained with Anthonie van Blocklandt in Utrecht. He became one of the leading portraitists of the Dutch Republic. The city of Delft's commission for a portrait of Maurice of Nassau in 1607 marked a decisive stage in his career and strengthened his connections with the House of Orange.
His workshop met substantial demand for portraits of princes, dignitaries and prosperous families. His sons Pieter and Jan contributed to this production, which included repeated versions of prestigious models. Precise faces, carefully rendered fabrics and restrained presentation characterise these official likenesses. The collections of the Rijksmuseum and Mauritshuis illustrate his approach to portraiture, balancing individual resemblance with the representation of social standing.
This profile brings together identity references for Michiel Jansz. van Mierevelt and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
