Asger Jorn
Born : 1914Died : 1973
Asger Jorn, born Asger Oluf Jørgensen, was a Danish artist whose life spanned 1914 to 1973. His career brought together painting, writing and participation in several art movements. In 1936, he arrived in Paris to join Fernand Léger’s Académie contemporaine, a documented stage in his training. During the Nazi occupation of Denmark, he was active in the communist resistance and took part in the Høst artists’ group. In 1948, he was among the founders of CoBrA. In 1955, he founded the International Movement for an Imaginist Bauhaus, and in 1957 took part in its merger with other groups to form the Situationist International. He left the Situationist International in 1961, after signing a tract written by Gruppe SPUR in 1959.
His painting practice includes two series of détourned paintings, *Modifications* (1959) and *Nouvelles défigurations* (1962). Writing was also part of his activity: he published *Immagine e forma* in Milan in 1954 and *Contre le fonctionnalisme* in Paris in 1957. *Fin de Copenhague*, made with Guy Debord, was published the same year. From 1969 to 1972, he maintained a home and studio at 82 Rue Saint-Denis, in Colombes.
In Silkeborg, the Jorn Museum includes a contemporary art department created by the artist; he also left a collection to it. Works by Jorn are held, among other institutions, at the Statens Museum for Kunst and the Louisiana Museum in Denmark, as well as at Tate, the Guggenheim, the Centre Pompidou and the Museum de Fundatie. In 2013–2014, the exhibition *Wemaëre et Jorn, la force des contraires*, devoted to their friendship, was presented first in Roubaix and then in Paris.
