János Vaszary (1867–1939), born in Kaposvár and deceased in Budapest, was a Hungarian painter trained in Budapest, Munich and Paris. His early work moved between Naturalism, Symbolism and Art Nouveau. He also designed textiles, participating in the exchange between fine and applied arts around 1900. Encounters with French artistic developments during his travels repeatedly redirected his painting.
The experience of the First World War darkened his work, before luminous colours returned during the 1920s. Urban scenes, beaches and fashionable figures then became important subjects, rendered with a swift, free brushstroke. A professor at Budapest’s art academy from 1920 to 1932, Vaszary encouraged openness to modern artistic experimentation. His career consequently links several generations and different tendencies within the development of Hungarian modernism.
