Bartolomeo Pinelli

Born : 1781Died : 1835

The Italian painter and printmaker Bartolomeo Pinelli developed a body of work combining watercolour, etching and the illustration of historical and literary subjects. Born in Rome on 20 November 1781, he died there on 1 April 1835. After his family moved to Bologna in 1792, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts there, then continued his training at the Accademia di San Luca in Rome, returning there in 1799. In the capital, he worked with Franz Kaisermann and added figures to his watercolour landscapes.

These works testify to his interest in depicting the customs and figures of his Roman surroundings, approached through both watercolour painting and printmaking.

Literary illustration also has a place in his work: the Art Institute of Chicago lists scenes from The Adventures of Telemachus dated 1808, taken from Books 4 and 8. Pinelli subsequently produced illustrations for a Storia romana in 1816, then for a Storia greca in 1821. Between 1822 and 1823, he executed fifty plates to accompany Giuseppe Berneri’s poem Meo Patacca. A catalogue from MuseiD-Italia also attributes to him a drawing dated 1830, La madre spartana che dice al figlio di tornare vincitore, o morto sopra lo scudo, measuring 326 × 430 mm.
