Jānis Avotins

Documented citizenships : Latvia

Jānis Avotiņš, born in 1981, is a Latvian painter who studied at the Art Academy of Latvia and completed a traineeship in Manchester. His images examine the persistence of the past through archival photographs and printed documents. Drawing recedes into subtly modulated layers of colour, leaving uncertain figures and spaces to emerge.

His repertoire includes images from the Soviet press, whose legibility and associations with memory he transforms. Shown at the Ludwig Forum in Aachen in 2008 and the Saatchi Gallery in 2012, his work connects recognition with disappearance. The exhibition Distances, held at the Art Museum Riga Bourse in 2026, extended this inquiry: a group photograph from the 1920s became the starting point for a painterly investigation of relationships between figures and space.

This profile brings together identity references for Jānis Avotins and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
