Agnolo di Cosimo, known as Bronzino, was a Florentine painter associated with sixteenth-century Mannerism. A pupil of Pontormo, he worked for the Medici and portrayed members of their circle while also producing religious compositions. Drawing and the careful arrangement of figures underpin these different aspects of his practice.
His portrait of Eleonora of Toledo with her son Giovanni, held by the Uffizi, connects a family image with dynastic authority. Brocade, jewellery and the blue background contribute to this presentation of power. In London, An Allegory with Venus and Cupid explores another register: bodies and attributes form an elaborate puzzle about love and deception. The precise meaning of the whole remains debated, making it useful to distinguish the visible motifs from the interpretations proposed for them.
This profile brings together identity references for Bronzino and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
