Anton von Werner, born in Frankfurt an der Oder in 1843 and deceased in Berlin in 1915, was a German painter specialising in historical and contemporary subjects. Trained at the academies in Berlin and Karlsruhe, he became close to Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm. Invited to Versailles in January 1871, he witnessed the proclamation of the German Empire, which he depicted in several versions.
His paintings combine recognisable portraits, precise uniforms and theatrical arrangements of ceremonies. These compositions helped construct the new Empire’s official image while drawing on extensive preparatory studies. Director of the Berlin Academy from 1875, Werner exercised considerable influence over institutional artistic life. Beyond major political commissions, he also produced illustrations, portraits and scenes of society that demonstrate the range of his practice.
