William Etty, born in York in 1787, who died in 1849, trained at the Royal Academy Schools in London. John Opie’s lectures encouraged his interest in history painting and the examples of Titian and Rubens. During his European travels, he studied the Old Masters; in Venice, he copied Titian, Tintoretto and Veronese, retaining these works as sources of inspiration in his studio.
The nude occupies a central place in his painting. Rich colour attracted admiration, while the bodies he represented repeatedly prompted moral criticism. Etty also produced portraits and landscapes. In Hero Dying on the Body of Leander, exhibited in 1829 and preserved at Tate, the fate of the ancient lovers allows him to bring the human body into a scene concerned with death and grief.
This profile brings together identity references for William Etty and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
