SwissArtGallery · Documented identity
Born in Nîmes, Auguste Chabaud (1882–1955) trained at the Avignon art school before moving to Paris in 1899. At the Académie Carrière he met artists including Matisse and Derain. After military service in Tunisia, he divided his time between Paris and Graveson. Cabarets, streets and nightlife inspired paintings whose intense colours and incisive drawing relate to Fauvism and Expressionism.
After the First World War, he settled permanently at Mas de Martin, his family’s property in Graveson. The Montagnette landscape, agricultural work and still lifes became his principal subjects. Simplified forms, black outlines and Prussian blue shape a Provence stripped of conventional picturesque charm. Also a sculptor and writer, Chabaud participated in the 1913 Armory Show and exhibited regularly in France and abroad.
This profile brings together identity references for Auguste Chabaud and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
