The Prussian painter Oswald Achenbach, born and deceased in Düsseldorf, devoted a significant part of his work to the Italian landscape, whose colourful views and play of light informed his painting. In 1835, he entered the elementary class at the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts, where he continued his training until 1841; his brother Andreas also contributed to his education. In 1843, he travelled to Upper Bavaria and northern Tyrol. After a journey to northern Italy with Albert Flamm, Italian landscapes became the principal subjects of his paintings.
In the summer of 1850, he set off for Italy again, travelling via Nice, Genoa and Rome. During an Italian journey with the painter Albert Flamm, he made oil sketches en plein air: these prioritise colour, general forms and the relationships between light and shadow over detail. The sources note his interest in the Bay of Naples and the area around Rome, as well as the presence of small figures in many of his landscapes. Although trained at the Düsseldorf Academy, Achenbach was among the artists who criticised its academic conception of art.
He was a founding member of the Malkasten association, established on 11 August 1848, and remained connected to it throughout his life. From 1850, his paintings were exhibited at Eduard Schulte’s gallery in Düsseldorf. His works are held, among other institutions, in museums in Düsseldorf and Cologne, at the Kunsthallen in Kiel and Mannheim, at the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart and at the Neue Pinakothek in Munich.
