August Stimpfl

Born : 1924Died : 2010Documented citizenships : Austria

Austrian painter August Stimpfl, born and deceased in Imst, pursued a practice ranging from painting to works integrated into architecture. He attended the School of Applied Arts in Innsbruck until 1941, then studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna from 1948 to 1951 under Robin Christian Andersen and Herbert Boeckl. Between these two stages, he was called up for military service from 1942 to 1945 in Russia, the Caucasus and Norway.

Acrylic painting has a place in his oeuvre, which was shown in several cities in Central Europe, including Vienna, Basel, Munich, Stuttgart and Zurich; he also practised drawing, printmaking and monotype. From 1965 to 1970, he also produced works of a technoid character, using a computer-assisted working method. In 1980, he undertook a study visit to New York with Reiner Schiestl.

Art integrated into architecture forms an important part of his practice, which he frequently pursued in collaboration with the architect Norbert Heltschl, who was also from Imst. In 1956, he created the mural «Apokalyptische Reiter» in the Chapel of St Michael at Imst cemetery. For the parish church of St Joseph the Worker in Landeck-Bruggen, he designed a glass-concrete wall, an ambo and door leaves in 1963; in 1967, he created glass paintings for the Church of the Holy Angels in Imst-Brennbichl. Around 1991, he painted a fresco in the choir of St Anthony’s Chapel in Imst.

The exhibitions recorded include those at the Galerie im Taxispalais and the Stadtturmgalerie in Innsbruck, in 1965 and 1974 respectively. He took part in Art Basel in 1980 and exhibited at the Tiroler Landesmuseum Ferdinandeum in 1982. In 1994, a retrospective entitled «Retrospektive über 25 Jahre» was presented at the Tiroler Landesmuseum Ferdinandeum and Schloss Maretsch in Bolzano.
