Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) trained in Florence in Andrea del Verrocchio’s workshop, studying drawing, painting, sculpture and goldsmithing among other practices. In Milan, working for Ludovico Sforza, he combined artistic activity with engineering projects. He painted The Last Supper at Santa Maria delle Grazie between 1495 and 1498. His notebooks extend this practice through observation, the study of nature and experimentation. Returning to Florence in the early sixteenth century, he worked on the Battle of Anghiari project and began the portrait of Lisa Gherardini, the Mona Lisa. In 1516 he settled at Clos Lucé near Amboise, bringing paintings and manuscripts. There he continued his investigations, devised a palace and city project for Romorantin and organised festivities for the French court.
