August Ferdinand Hopfgarten

August Ferdinand Hopfgarten was a German painter and draughtsman, born in Berlin in 1807, where he died in 1896. Trained at the Berlin Academy, particularly under Karl Wilhelm Wach, he developed a figurative practice drawing on religious and literary subjects. Tasso before Leonore d’Este, dated 1839 and held by the Alte Nationalgalerie, takes its subject from Goethe’s drama.

The Miracle of Saint Elizabeth, signed in Rome in 1832 and acquired by Bertel Thorvaldsen, now belongs to the Thorvaldsens Museum in Copenhagen. A pencil study of a kneeling female nude at Vienna’s Albertina reveals another aspect of his practice. These works bring together painted narrative and the examination of the body through drawing, although the nude study cannot be connected to a specific known composition.

This profile brings together identity references for August Ferdinand Hopfgarten and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
