Jan Gabrielsz. Sonjé, born in Delft around 1625, belongs to the landscape painters of the seventeenth-century Netherlands. Active in Delft and Rotterdam, he is associated with the teaching of Adam Pynacker and the tradition of Italianate landscape. His work includes both paintings and drawings, addressing wooded settings as well as river views and the surroundings of towns.
Edge of a Forest in the Evening, dated 1654 at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, is a small, almost square oil painting on panel. It places the representation of nature within a particular moment of the day. View along the Amstel, held by the Rijksmuseum, offers a different approach: the drawing combines a pencil sketch, grey brushwork and brown pen lines to depict the river in Amsterdam.
This profile brings together identity references for Jan Gabrielsz Sonjé and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
