Jan de Baen was a portrait painter active in The Hague and at the court of the House of Orange. The Royal Collection describes his development from models associated with Rembrandt’s school towards an elegance derived from Van Dyck. Clothing, attributes and settings in his formal portraits communicate the rank and responsibilities of the people represented.
The Portrait of Johan Maurits, Count of Nassau-Siegen, painted at Cleves around 1668–1670 and held by the Mauritshuis, includes gardens laid out by the sitter. William III, still Prince of Orange, wears theatrical Roman armour in the Royal Collection portrait of about 1667; Hercules fights the Nemean lion behind him. The portraits of Johan and Cornelis de Witt, painted in 1669 and held in Dordrecht, likewise belong to his practice of political representation.
