The Dutch painter from the United Provinces Dirck Hals is best known for his genre scenes. Born in Haarlem in 1591 and dying in the same city in 1656, he developed a body of work whose several documented titles refer to gatherings and entertainments, including “Merry Company in a Garden” and “Country Feast”. The younger brother of Frans Hals, he received his first painting lessons from his elder brother. The biographical notice also notes the particular influence of works by Esaias van de Velde and Willem Pietersz. Buytewech.
His career in Haarlem included several forms of civic involvement: he served in the second company of the St George militia from 1618 to 1624 and belonged to the chamber of rhetoric De Wijngaertranken from 1618 to 1626. He was admitted to the Guild of St Luke in 1627. He also stayed in Leiden in 1641–1642 and again in 1648–1649, where he rented a house.
The recorded works provide concrete reference points within this body of work: “Merry Company in a Garden”, dated 1621, is recorded at the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest, while “Country Feast” (1627) is held at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. A “Gallant Scene” is also recorded at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Carcassonne. “Die Wahrsagerin”, an oil painting on wood, is attributed to Dirck Hals in a sale catalogue; an old label on the reverse attributes it to A. Palamedesz. His works are also recorded at the Louvre, the National Gallery in London and the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem.
This profile brings together identity references for Dirck Hals and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
