Sohan Qadri

Born : 1932Died : 2011Documented citizenships : India

Sohan Qadri (1932–2011), an artist born in Punjab, used paper and colour to pursue an artistic inquiry connected with meditation. He studied at the Simla College of Art and subsequently taught in Phagwara, where Mulk Raj Anand discovered his work in 1961. The name Qadri expressed his attachment to a Sufi teacher. Initially figurative, his practice moved towards abstraction and an organisation of colour into dark, warm or cool, and light registers. His international career included Paris, where he exhibited at Galerie Arnaud in 1966, and Copenhagen, where he arrived in 1969. Over the course of his development, he favoured dyed, textured paper over impasto oil painting. This material transformation accompanied his search for expression arising from meditative experience.

This profile brings together identity references for Sohan Qadri and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
